{"id":293,"date":"2020-03-17T10:59:58","date_gmt":"2020-03-17T10:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leadingachildrenshospital.com\/?p=293"},"modified":"2020-03-23T14:36:23","modified_gmt":"2020-03-23T14:36:23","slug":"293","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadingachildrenshospital.com\/?p=293","title":{"rendered":"Relationship-centered interactions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This unique and challenging, relatively sudden disruption to everyday life is an opportunity for us all to realize new ways of seeing life, be more aware of the balance in things, connect with our humanity, and grow as a person. \u00a0This includes how we communicate and interact with others.<\/p>\n<p>Relationship-centered care is a frame for looking at how we as professionals approach working with others.\u00a0 It starts with increasing one\u2019s awareness of where they are as a person physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually*, and letting that awareness inform hot buttons, biases, personality traits and other factors, which might impact the\u00a0interaction. \u00a0It also allows for one to use self-compassion and be ok with where we are at that moment.\u00a0 Self-compassion allows for an honest assessment of one\u2019s current state, and allows wiggle room for imperfections.\u00a0 Compassion for self is a presupposition for having compassion for others. \u00a0<em>[*Spirituality simply refers to the way you relate to the world and your purpose in it.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The next step in relationship-centered care is for one to be open to and as aware as they can to where the other person is currently.\u00a0 Compassion for them as a person, for the challenges and struggles they bring with them, for their feelings as well as their thoughts.\u00a0 Compassion is enabled by\u00a0empathy, \u00a0and motivated by concern. \u00a0It&#8217;s fueled by virtue.\u00a0 It may not be essential to a relationship or interaction, but it sure helps.<\/p>\n<p>The third step is to see the relationship in the context of your team (or family), the neighborhood (or organization), and the community (or society).\u00a0 Interactions are relational first, and situational second, and essentially never one or the other.\u00a0 Certainly in most professional and educational interactions, they are contextual.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve known about relationship-centered care for well over 10 years, and some elements come natural to me, or at least I\u2019m naturally aware of them. \u00a0Yet I\u2019m no expert practitioner, and that\u2019s ok. \u00a0Each of us has certain genetic and experiential realities\u00a0that make us imperfectly human. \u00a0There are invariably situational smoke screens that can cloud our vision of things.<\/p>\n<p>Be kind to yourself, take a deep breath, be aware, and be positive in your interactions. \u00a0We&#8217;re all in this together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This unique and challenging, relatively sudden disruption to everyday life is an opportunity for us all to realize new ways of seeing life, be more aware of the balance in things, connect with our humanity, and grow as a person. \u00a0This includes how we communicate and interact with others.
